In their 50 plus years of life, rail cars may be changed or updated for a variety of service sectors. Gates originally installed on the car may no longer be the best choice for the service in which the cars will now be used. In the past this could have meant a best case scenario compromise between what would fit the car and what you really want and need. With and ATP adapter flange that is no longer a choice you are required to make.
A number of adapter designs have been produced allowing cars to be changed from weld on to bolt on gates, updated from older smaller styles to a bigger opening with a better sealing system or to replace an obsolete model with a production gate.
